Knight FamilyBrothers Family

The direct lines of the family are made up of 29% Hancox, 4% Knight, 3% Hancock, 3% Linney, and 2% Brothers. The Knights come from Southampton, Hampshire, the Brothers are from Langford Bedfordshire, the Hancox are from Tysoe Warwickshire, the Hancocks from Kent, and the Bridgers are from Poplar in East London. Today the descendants are England, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A, France and Spain.

The Knights were generally employed in low skilled work and the Brothers were Agricultural Labourers. The Hancoxs were Masons, Shoemakers, Blacksmiths and Farm Labourers. The Hancocks were Watermen and Lightermen and Hairdressers.

John Knight born 1750. He married Phebe Carpenter, in 1770 at St Faiths, Havant. Hants

William Knight was born circa 1776 and died in 1884. He married Rachel Chrisdee on 12th October 1807, at Holy Trinity Church in Millbrook, Hants, and he was a Last Maker by trade.

There were six known children from this union:
Jabez, William, Hannah, Rachel, John, and Janet.

Jabez (known as James),
born circa 1811 and baptized 14th January 1812 at the Above Bar Independent Church, Southampton. He married Harriet Harris circa 1835 and they had the following children:

William, James, Eliza, Sarah Ann, Florence, Henry, Elizabeth, and Benjamin.

Benjamin
1853, married Julia Ruth Linney 1853, on 29th April 1872 in Southampton. The children from this marriage were Herbert, Benjamin Edwin, Julia Ada Louise, Harriot, and Elizabeth Agnes.

Benjamin Edwin
1876 - 1945, married Margaret Cecilla Stokes 1880 - 1965, on 21st March 1908.

Their children were Benjamin and Doris.

Benjamin
1905 -2005 married Eileen Hancock on 2nd November 1937.





THE HANCOX FAMILY

The Hancoxs come from Tysoe and Oxhill in Warwickshire, the earliest ancestor is John Hancox 1640, who married Ann Hewens on 21 February 1676 at Blessed Virgin of the Assumption Church Tysoe. There is a church record that Ann was denounced as "A popish recusant"

The issue from this union was Lydia 1677 - 1712 who married William Savage on 2nd July 1704, but Lydia had had a son Joseph Hancox baptized at St Lawrence Church Oxhill on 13th December 1698, the other children were Elizabeth Savage 1706, and William Savage 1711. Lydia was only 36 when she died in chilbirth.

Joseph married Joan Hitchcock on 26th March 1722 at Illmington Warks. Their children were Thomas 1723 - 1779 and Edward 1729.

Thomas married Mary Hemming 1723 - 1779, at Tysoe. Their children were John 1747, Richard 1750, Thomas 1751, Mary 1752, Joseph 1753, Edward 1755, Emma 1756, Elizabeth 1758, Nehemiah 1759, Lydia 1761, James 1762, William 1764, Samuel 1767, Robert 1768, and Job 1770.

Nehemiah 1759 -1835, married Elizabeth Hunt 1775 - 1826, on 21st August 1780 at Brailes, Warks., Their children were Mary 1782, William 1783, Charlotte 1790, Joseph 1794, died the same year, Lydia 1798, and Joseph 1800- 1845.

William 1783 - 1853, married Ann Brown, 1813 - 1865, on 13th January 1813 in Northampton, there is one child recorded, George 1829 - 1877.

George married Elizabeth Steadman, 1832, on 20th June 1853 in Strood Kent. Their child was Edward Aubrey Hancock, Edward first married Eliza Baker, then Clara Emma Griffin, and lastly Ann Taylor Davies.

Edward Aubrey and Eliza Baker had a son Edward William Richard 1883 - 1939,
who married Rowena Tidmarsh in 1909, she died 1910, He next married Dorothy Clara Rotton 1889 - 1978, on 10th January 1910in Brighton Sussex.

The children from this union were Ethel Ruby (known as Ruby) 1912 - 1981, Cyril Richard 1914, Grace 1915 - 2001, Eileen 1918, Aubra 1919 - 1992, Alfred 1923 - 1975, Malcolm 1927 - 1997, Edward 1929.

THE BROTHERS FAMILY

The Brothers come from Langford in Bedfordshire and they were all Agricultural Labourers. The family name will die out with Brian Charles Brothers. They are all descended from John Brothers 1799 - 1882, John married Mary Hills, 1798 - 1856, in circa 1823 probably in Langford. Their children were Abraham 1824, John 1825, and Sarah 1828.

John 1825, married Eliza Livell 1842, in 1862 at Biggleswade Bedfordshire. The children from this marriage were William 1864, Amelia 1866, Charles Abraham 1870, Arthur James 1873, Lillia 1876, Elizabeth 1879, George 1881 and Emma 1886.

Charles Abraham married Emily Elizabeth Smith 1879, in June 1900 at West Ham, London. Their children were Edward, Emma, Lilly, Charles John Henry 1902, Rose 1903, George 1907 - 1984, Ivy 1911, Henry James 1913 - 1979, Maud Florence 1919 - 2001, John William 1905 - 1908.

Henry James married Norah Bridger 1914 - 1977, at Holy Trinity Church West Ham on 28th August 1937, Henry was a Painter/Glazier by trade.

THE BRIDGER FAMILY

The Bridgers came from Bromley by Bow area of the east end of London. They were Waterman and Lightermen by trade.

Joshua Bridger circa 1834, married Elizabeth circa 1834 and their children were Joshua 1863, Edward 1868 and Henry .

1863, married Annie 1863, He was a Waterman by trade and their children were Edward 1884, Annie 1888, Charles 1890, Henry 1886, Joshua 1882, Lily 1892, Willie 1894, Horace 1897. They were all born in the POplar Bromley area of East London.

Edward 1884, married an unknown Everett. Their children were Edward, Richard, Sophia, Sarah, Carry, and Norah.
